Bear Attack

Paul Hassell (Picture / Bear Attack) from Pennsylvania had a close encounter with a black bear recently while hunting in New-Brunswick.

See, what he have to say about it :

''When we got to camp our guides told us to stay in the stand and I found out why later on.

On Wednesday of our hunt it began to rain and I did not want to get my camera equipment wet, so I climbed down out of the stand to head for cover under a pine tree near the road and wait for my guides, as I started up the path to the road a bear passed me going down toward the bait, as we across paths the bear and I both stopped and turn to look at each other, as I knocked an arrow the bear made a fast movement back towards me...

I panic and fired an arrow without time to aim and made a dash for the stand luckily for me the bear retreated as well.

Needless to say that shocks me up pretty good. The next night I was very reluctant to go back out but my guide lent me his personal rifle to use instead of my bow and even accompanied me to my stand.

That night I filled my tag. If I learned one thing on this hunt it was to listen to your guide!''

Bear Attack or Bear Bluff

Some expert are divided on the subject: Was it a Bluff Charge or a Bear Attack(false charge)

Per experience Outfitter are often face with this type of dilemma. Outfitters many time encounters bears around the bait site.

They do respect the bear capacity, as when they arrive at bait site they will bang their doors, talk, and make noise to make sure bears know they are coming and leave the area.

But many time, when it is winding, bear don't necessaly hear them coming, so this create some unexpected encounters.

Best experience Outfitter will simply leave the food where they are and walk back slowly keeping an eye on the bear but avoiding direct eye contact.

Also some bear will simply not move and stick at the bait site , then it is wise to drop the food and walk back slowly and come back later.

Our best advice is the following:

What ever it is a Bluff Charge or a Bear Attack(false charge), just be extra careful when dealing with bears !

KEEP YOUR DISTANCE !!!
