Black Bear Feces - Look For Sign
When your guide takes you to your stand, don't be afraid to Look For Sign ( black bear feces ).
Bears will defecate around the bait and the trails leading to and from
the bait site.
A word of caution though! Stay only in the area right
where the bear eats around the bait.
Do Not Go walking around on the
trails the bears use. If you do, you could shut the bait completely down.
They accept only a certain amount of human scent.
Bait Site
Black Bear Feces can tell you if there are different bears coming to the site, and
when. If you find different size feces there will be multiple bears
using the site. Small feces will be small or immature bear. Large feces
will tell you big mature bears are there as well. Feces can also tell
you if a mother with cubs are using the bait site.
This does not mean a big male is not using this site. Especially in the
spring, because males will be searching for females to breed with. A
male will actually kill the cubs just to breed with the mother.

It is not uncommon to find four or five different size feces around the
bait. I truly believe a big boar will defecate right by the bait to
leave sign that he is there, and this is his food source. So Beware!
If you see white chalky colored feces, this is from a bear that has
recently come out of hibernation.
The bear's digestive system is
virtually empty of food, and the first time the bear defecates it will
be a chalky white color. This tells you the bear probably lives close
by. Bears will learn that these sites are a food source and will come
back each spring.
Outfitters
Outfitters will use this type of sign when they are looking for places
to set up new bait sites. If they are driving and see this type of feces
on the road, they can look around for more sign. Then they can determine
if this is an area to start up a new bait and stand site.
There will be multiple trails leading to your bait site that are very
visible. But don't be afraid to Look For Sign.
