Going on a Bear Hunt - New-Brunswick Canada

Going on a bear hunt in New-Brunswick, Canada during fall was the most phenomenal hunt of my life, in 2 days and 1 hour I seen 16 bears, what a breath taking scenery.

Going on a bear hunt Day 1, in only one half hour into my hunt a mother bear with 3 cubs came in. The cubs feed for over one hour. It was awesome to watch the little cubs crawl into the 55 gallon bait drum together. Several times they would scamper off and climb up a tree. Only to return each time. When the cubs had their fill of donuts, mom ate a little herself and off they went.

Shortly after they left, another mom with 2 cubs came in to enjoy some donuts. After about an half hour they too went back into the woods. Minutes later yet another mom with 1 cub came in, and yes they were all different bears.

I could not believe that so many females with cubs were in the same area, feeding at the same bait. Before I could begin to comprehend what I just witnessed another bear came in.

This bear was alone and looked to be between 175 to 200 pounds. I chose to pass on this bear in hopes of the big bear spotted on this stand in the spring, would come in. Unbelievable! 10 bears in one night. What could day 2 possibly have in store for for me,in New-Brunswick, Canada.

Going on a bear hunt Day 2 started out with the mom with 1 cub coming in shortly after we set up in our stands.

I say our stands, because my wife was with me capturing all this on film.

They feed for a short time and walked off. Within a matter of minutes a small bear about 100 pounds came in.

This bear was real nervous, and I guess I couldn't blame him. After eating a few donuts the bear disappeared into the thick woods of New-Brunswick.

By now it started raining and before my wife and I could finish our snack, a nice bear appeared out of nowhere.

This bear looked to be about 250 pounds, and was 6 feet tall or better when it stood up on his hind legs. I decided to try and take this bear. Unfortunately every time the bear reached into the barrel or sat down to eat, his leg was back over it's vitals.

I was hunting with a bow and arrow, so I had to wait for a perfect clear shot, going on a bear hunt you must have patience.

This went on for about fifteen minutes before the bear turned and walked off with out giving me a shot opportunity.

Going on a bear hunt Day 3 we chose to move to another stand because of all the mothers with cubs. I did not want possibly make a mistake and shoot one of the mothers If they came in alone. ( legal or not) The plan was for the guide to drop us off and we would go in and get our stands, while he dropped off the other hunters.

As always my wife thinks ahead. She insisted that I take my bow and she would grab the camera just in case a bear would come in before the guide came back. And sure enough , while I was taking down our umbrellas a small bear came right in under our stand. It spooked off, but a few minutes later we seen it walking toward the bait. Right before it reached the opening to the bait it took off on a dead run.

A minute later we found out why. A nice bear strolled in. Just as the bear grabbed a donut the guide called on the radio to see if we were ready to come out, and off he went.

I told my wife to answer back and tell him that a bear was just here and we would call him back. Thankfully it was real windy and the bear never heard the radio because he came right back in, grabbed another donut and off again. He did this one more time. By now I decided to try and take this bear.

After all, what a story line this would be if I shot this bear. So when I seen him coming back in again, I drew my bow.

When he got to the barrel and stuck his head in to grab some goodies, I released the arrow. The arrow hit perfectly and passed right through both lungs.

After calming down from what just happen, we radioed the guide to come in. After a short tracking job we found my bear. A nice jet black 200 pound male bear. Sixteen bears in less than 3 nights on stand.

You never know what to expect when your going on a bear hunt in New-Brunswick, Canada.
