Our harvest of black bear is a major part of controlling the damage done to farmer’s crops, such as corn. We hunt only active baited sites from tree stands. These stands are located in a range of 15 to 45 yards from the baits, making those sites ideals for both bow and gun hunters.

Holden Lake Lodge We offer a choice of several different hunts at Holden Lake Lodge. Our most popular hunt is our fully guided spring bear hunt. We have been keeping records for the past 5 years and our results are fantastic. We take about 8 hunters a week from the 15th of May to the 10th of June. The number of bear sightings has been 98.4% and the harvest ratio is 87%. Many of the bears harvested were trophy grade and we develop new bait sites every year.

Two main reasons can explained this interesting situation: the hunting pressure is at a minimum level and the quality of the habitat meets all the needs of our friend the black bear. The Baskatong area is surrounded by millions of acres of forest, rivers, streams and lakes. Wild berries and mushrooms are plentiful and can easily sustain our friend’ s appetite.

This is due in part to the large number of bears in the region and size of the area we’re hunting. With the hundreds of miles of bush roads to place baits and the large outlaying areas of no roads helps not only to ensure a good population but provides us with many trophy class bears of 250lbs to 400lbs. The success of kills has been good at about 80%, plus the ones seen or missed.
